Why Scar Mobilization is so important?

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

What is a scar?

A scar is our body's natural way of healing and replacing lost or damaged skin. Scars may appear anywhere on the body, and the composition may vary. A scar may appear lumpy, flat, sunken, or colored, also it can be painful or itchy. Scars may be formed for many different reasons, including as a result of infections, surgery, injuries, or inflammation of the tissue.

Why Scar Mobilization?

The human body is really a phenomenal system that has the unique ability to completely rebuild itself when we get injured, biologically stitching the wounds back together. Don’t you think it’s amazing? The problem is that the scar tissue is much stiffer and thicker than the adjacent tissue, and sometimes it can get restricted and bound down to the surrounding tissue. The deeper the scar goes into the body, the more layers of skin, muscle, and connective tissue can get stuck together so in this case scar mobilization should be a component of any post-op rehab and recovery process.

Type of Massage for Scar Mobilization?

There are 2 types of massage that you can get from Shapecare Therapy for scar mobilization and they are sports massage and deep tissue massage. Sports massage is used to break down scar tissue and mainly focuses on areas containing soft tissues. Sports massage can vary in pressure depending on personal preference. The breakdown of scar tissue occurs during a sports massage as an increase in the temperature of the scar tissue is encouraged. An increase in temperature helps the scar tissue to loosen and be broken down more easily. A variety of techniques are used within a sports massage aiming to break down scar tissue, decrease pain and increase relaxation.

The other type of massage for scar mobilization is Deep Tissue Massage. Deep, firm pressure is used during a deep tissue massage aiming to get deeper within muscle fibres and tissues. A deep tissue massage breaks down adhesions and collagen fibres that can be caused as a result of scar tissue. Adhesions restrict movement and increase pain resulting in an increase in stress. Breaking down scar tissue through deep tissue massage relieves restriction to decrease pain and reduce stress.

These 2 types of massage will help to normalize sensation, improve tissue mobility, ground & release emotional tension, and improve functional mobility.
